The IRS Whistleblower program gets another “sequestration reduction.” This program pays cash awards to individuals who provide specific or credible information to the IRS about unpaid taxes, if the information is used. For fiscal year 2021 (Oct. 1, 2020 through Sept. 30, 2021), those awards (along with other types of payments) will be reduced by 5.7%, in accordance with the automatic across-the-board spending cuts brought by sequestration, to help deal with the government budget deficit. The reduction is determined annually. This year’s reduction is down from the FY 2020 reduction of 5.9%, the FY 2019 reduction of 6.2%, and the 2018 reduction of 6.6%.
