Improper payments made by the federal government “continue to be an area of fiscal concern” according to a new report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). For fiscal year 2019, these payments were estimated at $175 billion, up from $151 billion for FY 2018. Improper payments were concentrated in three programs: Medicaid ($57.4 billion); Medicare ($46.2 billion); and the Earned Income Tax Credit ($17.4 billion). Finding an effective solution seems to be hindered by: “incomplete, unreliable, or understated agency estimates,” problems with risk assessments and agencies not meeting the reporting requirements of a prior law, the report said.
