The IRS has issued a timely reminder to employers: File Forms W-2 and W-3 with the Social Security Administration by Jan. 31. Make sure the employer identification numbers (EIN) on the W-2s and W-3s, as well as on your payroll tax returns, match your assigned EIN. If you can’t meet the deadline, you may request a 30-day extension by submitting a completed Form 8809 by Jan. 31. To be considered for an extension, your organization needs to meet one of the criteria in Section 7 of the form. Note that filing Form 8809 doesn’t extend the deadline for furnishing wage statements to employees. That requires you to file a separate extension request. Contact us for assistance.
