Taxpayers who can’t resolve issues with the IRS on their own may be able to find help from the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS). TAS is an independent agency within the IRS, that exists to ensure taxpayers are treated fairly. Cases the TAS can currently accept must deal with one of four issues. They include: cases involving the revocation of an agency’s tax-exempt status based on unfiled tax returns; cases referred from a Congressional office (except those related to stimulus payments or tax return adjustments for unemployment compensation); passport denials or revocations due to tax delinquency; and tax debt cases referred to private collection agencies.
